Red Squirrel Conservation: online training event, 5 March 11.00am

Red squirrels were once found across most of the UK, but grey squirrels introduced in 1876 to Henbury Park in Cheshire have been highly successful and the reds have been in sharp decline since! Even though Scotland is a red squirrel stronghold with approximately 75% of the UK population, they are still classified as near threatened.

Kay Haw is the UK Squirrel Accord Director. At this event she will discuss the reasons why grey squirrels are so much more successful and how that is contributing to the decline in red squirrels. Kay will cover red squirrel population, monitoring and management to support red squirrel populations.

The UK Squirrel Accord (UKSA) is a UK-wide partnership of 39 leading conservation and forestry organisations, Government agencies and companies, with links to voluntary red squirrel conservation groups. https://squirrelaccord.uk/

Kay studied Tropical Forestry at Bangor University. Her previous roles include Woodland Trust Conservation Adviser (creating the Wood Wise publication and worked on invasive non-native species issues), Wildlife and Countryside Link Invasive Non-Native Species Working Group Chair, and EU Invasive Alien Species Working Group member.
